Iberdac-GAES Solidario in Santo Domingo

GAES Solidaria/Gran Prix del Atlántico

With handicap calculations applied Pilar Pasanau finishes in fourth place in the overall provisional rankings. Iberdac-GAES Solidaria completed the 3,800 miles from Puerto Sherry to Marina Sansouci in 34 days. Skipper Pilar Pasanau, the only solo skipper remaining in the race, reached Santo Domingo last night in seventh place in real time.

Following 34 days (807 hours, 58 minutes and 35 seconds) of sailing the only solo skipper in the 6th Atlantic Grand Prix, Spain-Dominican Republic Regatta, Pilar Pasanau has crossed the finishing line on board Iberdac-GAES Soldiaria. At 01 hours, 28 minutes and 34 seconds (GMT), the Spaniard reached Marina Sansouci, exhausted, but thrilled at having achieved her dream of sailing her first solo Atlantic crossing.

Iberdac-Gaes Solidaria finished the race in fourth place in the provisional general rankings for the R.I. Class, including handicaps and was the seventh entry to cross the finishing line in real time. This is an excellent result, especially considering that this is the skipper's first solo transatlantic regatta, as well as the fact that Pilar was up against crews of more than five members.

Pilar enjoyed a warm welcome from the other crews and the Regatta Director, Siga Curt when she reached the Santo Domingo shores. It was a tough regatta for all of the entries, but more so for Pilar Pasanau who came across a big storm just past the canaries and later endured debilitating lulls in the area of the trade winds and in the entrance to the Caribbean Sea.

Thanks to her skipper's excellent training, Iberdac-GAES Solidaria was one of the few entries who didn't make a stop during the race in either the Canaries nor the Caribbean to stock up on food or water. That doesn't mean to say Pilar's voyage was without it's headaches; the Spaniard suffered extensive problems with her satellite aerial and was unable to send a position reading to the race organisers until she had emerged from a storm and was able to ft the replacement aerial.

For the next few days Pilar will be enjoying a well-deserved rest before preparing the boat for the return journey back from the Dominican Republic to Barcelona, which she will also sail.
