
FNOB
The purpose of the trip is to establish a world record for offshore sailing sailing between the two cities that serve as a benchmark, as well as closer ties between New York and Barcelona with cultural programs, educational and sports.This is a pioneering initiative by being the first time in the history of ocean sailing an Atlantic and a Mediterranean city agree to set a record navigation between them.
The city of New York will host the sailing departure of the two twins participating in the competition, the Estrella Damm Sailing Team Sailing and Team W Hotels, two IMOCA Open 60 monohulls latest generation with which it competes in the Vendée Globe and the Barcelona World Race, which will turn this transatlantic competition between equals.
With two Spanish sailors and one U.S. by boat, sailing output will take place from Ambrose Light in New York, during the second week of April 2010, to get in front of the W Hotel in the port of Barcelona, between 20 and 30 April. The competition will run between 18 and 22 days to cover a distance of approximately 3,900 nautical miles (7,223 km). This record will be approved by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC), an international organization dependent on the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) which regulates sailing speed records worldwide.
The record NY-BCN is an initiative of the Foundation Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) with support from the NYC Sports Commission (Sports Commission City of New York) and the collaboration of Real Club Nautico de Barcelona and the New York Yacht Club. The Foundation Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) is the organizer of the Barcelona World Race, and this new initiative is part of the sports calendar of activities prior to the start of the second edition of the two round the world non-stop, which will take place on December 31, 2010.
