Frenchman Thomas Ruyant and his Prototype ‘France Faber’ have been the first to arrive at the port of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The skipper crossed the Charente Maritime / Bahia Transat 6.50 finish line at 9am 18 minutes and 34 seconds GMT this morning. The Mini GAES Solidaria skippers are set to cross the line Turing the morning of Saturday October 24th.
Thomas Ruyant has won the second leg in the Charente-Maritime / Bahia Transat 6.50 2009. Although Bertrand Delesne, winner of the first leg of the race, with a 3 hour and 35 second lead over Ruyant, has not yet finished, it looks like Ruyant has won the overall event. It is almost impossible for Delesne to cover the 43 miles separating him from the finish when Ruyant arrived, in less than those 3 hours.
The Mini GAES Solidaria team members are holding positions in the middle of the fleet and are now less than 48 hours away from Brazilian shores.
Favourite wins
Following a great leg, Thomas Ruyant has managed to live up to his fame as favourite. Although, as we write, the winner of Leg 1, Bertrand Delesne has still to finish, Ruyant’s great sail has really lived up to the hype. Now the total times for each leg must be calculated to discover who the overall winner is.
His entire time for the two legs is: 24 days 23 hours and 38 minutes, with an average speed of 7.14 knots.
The Mini GAES Solidaria team arrival
There’s not long left now for the Mini GAES Solidaria team. Anna Corbella is still the best placed in the Protos, in seventeenth place. This morning she was 425.1 miles from the finish, and so her arrival at Salvador de Bahia is forecasted for the morning of Saturday Oct 24th. A similar arrival time has been calculated for Toni Weijl and Juan Carlos Sanchis, still sailing close to Gerard Marin, who has dropped a few miles on his team-mates over the past few days, so may arrive somewhat later.
The best placed Spaniard in the Series Division is Hugo Ramon from Mallorca, in 13th place. In the last position report he was 461.11 miles from the finish and so should also arrive on Saturday. France’s Charles Dalin continues t olead in the category.
