SCIENCE / TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION
This is one of our key areas and we work across it on two fronts, through:
• The promotion of scientific data collection projects to generate knowledge on the status of the world’s oceans and encourage people to use the marine environment responsibly and sustainably.
• To encourage and support academic projects and papers, working alongside knowledge hubs and the scientific community on subjects relating to top flight ocean yacht Racing.
Across both fronts the FNOB shares the responsibility in guaranteeing the usability of the knowledge obtained, making sure it is used to benefit wider society in both business and domestic settings.
The FNOB is a pioneer in the use of ocean yacht races as a platform for environmental research, with an obvious focus on the sea.
With these projects, the FNOB aims to encourage and educate in a bid to raise awareness of the need to actively protect our oceans and to use marine resources in a sustainable manner.
Sailors racing in the competitions have now become scientific agents, providing invaluable research data on some of the most remote areas of the world’s oceans, making the Barcelona World Race an unprecedented communication bridge between science and sport.
The FNOB has been working in close collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) since 2009 which is the first time such an alliance has been formed between the world of yacht racing and the scientific community.
As a result of the IOC-UNESCO agreement, the following projects are being developed with organisations such as: Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM) at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS), JCOMMOPS, COI-UNESCO, Citclops (Citizen’s Observatory for Coast and Ocean Optical Monitoring) from the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Barcelona Digital Centro Tecnológico (BDigital)
